چکیده

We report results of a systematic study of the operational characteristics of a single-step parallel-plate avalanche chamber with CsI photocathode under high-gain conditions at room temperature and 1 atm pressure. Different mixtures of He and Ar with hydrocarbons were tested, as well as with ethylferrocene vapor which are known to form an adsorbed photosensitive layer on the Csl photocathode. The chamber can reach high gains, up to 106, has a very good time resolution (500 ps FWHM), and an energy resolution of 8.2% FWHM for 3 ! 103 primary photoelectrons with a quantum efficiency of the CsI photocathode of about 20% at 193 nm. Photon feedback, caused by avalanche emission with wavelength longer than 200 nm, was observed for large total charge and found to be nearly independent of the concentration of quencher in the range 7 to 70 Torr. Breakdown appears at a total charge of 101° electrons and is always of the slow type. There is good proportionality up to the breakdown limit.

Helium gas mixtures for ring imaging Cherenkov detectors with Csl photocathodes

In the past few years a readout for Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors [1] based on CsI photocathodes has been under intensive development [2-15] . The detector is a parallel-plate avalanche chamber (PPAC) with a UV-sensitive solid-CsI photocathode separated by a narrow gap (1-2 mm) from a wire-mesh anode plane (or wire anode plane as in ref. [4]) . The Cherenkov light generated in a radia...

Properties of reflective and semitransparent CsI photocathodes

Various aspects related to the quantum efficiency of the reflective and semitransparent CsI photocathodes have been investigated experimentally . The investigation explored the dependence of the quantum efficiency on the following: the thickness of the photocathode film, the gas used in the parallel-plate avalanche chamber, exposure to water vapor, and the density of the CsI film . With reflect...

Proposal for a Wire Chamber-Based CsI Photocathode for a B-Factory RICH

A design is considered for a CsI photocathode incorporating a proportional wire anode plane. This would have the advantage over the previously considered mesh anode or near wire anode that the anode wires could be moved further away from the cathode pads, allowing position to be determined using interpolation of imaged charge. This would enable comparable or superior position resolution with la...

Observation of Cherenkov rings using a low-pressure parallel-plate chamber and a solid cesium-iodide photocathode

We have observed Cherenkov rings from minimum-ionizing particles using a low-pressure, parallel-plate pad-chamber with a cesium-iodide solid photocathode . This detector is blind to minimum-ionizing particles, and sensitive to Cherenkov photons of wavelengths 170-210 rim. An average of 5 photoelectrons per Cherenkov ring were detected using a 2-cm-thick radiator of liquid C6F14 . This paper rep...

Testing of CsI Photocathodes Efficiencies in a Liquid Xenon Chamber

A summary of the Dark Matter problem and a more detailed overview of the WIMP/neutralino direct detection are introduced. More specifically the XENON – a next generation direct detection detector of WIMPs – is described. A detailed description is given on the techniques used in the current experiment to produce CsI photocathodes. Furthermore the tests done to check the performance of the CsI ph...
